Philip Carlin Buchanan was born on 4 January 1913 in Shawneetown, Illinois, per Indiana, Death Certificates, 1899-2011. His parents were Maurice Buchanan and Pearl Wilton.

According to the 1920 United States Federal Census, Carlin lived with his parents and siblings on Lafayette Street, Winslow, Pike County, Indiana. Morris G. Buchanan was 36, and his wife Pearl was 29. Versa was 9, Charles and Carlin were 7, and Lois was 5. Maurice was a Preacher.

According to the 1930 United States Federal Census, Carlin lived with his parents and siblings in Loogootee, Martin County, Indiana. His father, Maurice Buchanan, was 46 years old and working as a Methodist Pastor. His mother, Pearl, was 39 years old. He and his twin, Charles, were 17, and their sister, Lois, was 15. Maurice’s mother was born in Missouri. The rest were born in Illinois.

In 1934, per U.S. City Directories, 1822-1995, Carlin lived at 1233 N. State Ave, Indianapolis, Indiana, USA.

Marriage
Carlin married Theresa L. Owens on 17 April 1935 in Marion County, Indiana, per Web: Marion County, Indiana, Marriage Index, 1925-2012. Their marriage announcement on April 24, 1935, says they were married in their home on 2407 Brookside Drive in Indianapolis.

Carlin lived at 2036 Houston, Indianapolis, Indiana, with his wife, Theresa L., in 1936, per U.S. City Directories, 1822-1995. He was a shipping clerk with Royal Typewriter Co.

Carlin and Theresa had a baby girl on 19 April 1936 at 10:07 p.m. in Indianapolis, Indiana. They named her Theresa Anita Buchanan. At the time, they lived at 2036 Hueston Street.

Carlin was 23, and Theresa was 22. Carlin had been a shipping clerk with Royal Typewriting Co. for a year, and Theresa was a housewife.

Carlin and Theresa had another baby girl on June 13, 1937, at 9:41 p.m. They named her Carolyn Lois Buchanan. At the time, they lived at 3347 E. 20th, Indianapolis, Indiana. Carlin was 24 years old and working as a Vacuum Sweeper company salesman.

According to the 1940 United States Federal Census, Carlin lived with his wife and daughters at 2831 Kenwood Avenue, Indianapolis, Indiana. He worked in services and sales with a Typewriter Co. He was 29. He was born in Illinois; the other three were born in Indiana. His wife was Theresa, age 23. Their daughter Anita was 3, and Carolyn was 5. Carlin received $832 in wages. He paid $20 per month in rent.

Based on information from the U.S., World War II Draft Cards Young Men, 1940-1947, Carlin Phillip Buchanan, a 27-year-old white male from Ridgeway, Illinois, found himself residing in Indianapolis, Marion, Indiana, when he registered for the draft on October 16, 1940. At the time, he was employed by the Royal Typewriter Co., Inc. Standing 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighing 130 pounds, Carlin had a light complexion, red hair, and brown eyes. His next of kin was listed as Theresa Louise Buchanan, his wife.

Death
Philip Carlin passed away at St. John’s Hospital in Anderson, Madison County, Indiana, at 3:00 pm on 5 January 1967 due to Exsanguination due to a Ruptured Esophageal Varicose Vein that had onset 36 hours prior.

He had been suffering from Nutritional Chassis for years. He was 54 years old and living at 661 Easy Street, Glendale Heights, Illinois. The informant was his son-in-law, Michael Feeney.

According to Indiana, Death Certificates, 1899-2011, Philip Carlin Buchanan was buried at Crown Hill Cemetery on 9 January 1967. According to Find A Grave, he’s buried in section 224, lot 86.

His obituary tells us that one of his daughters married a Ben Conn, and another married a Mike Feeny. It looks like he may have had a third daughter, Carolyn Buchanan. His mother married William Fair, and his sister, Versa, married Robert Laird. His sister, Lois, had married a Mr. Boone. Philip had six grandchildren.
