Edna Mae Applegate in my most recent ancestor from the Applegate Family.  She was born on 16 December 1894 in Crothersville, Indiana, per Indiana, Death Certificates, 1899-2011.

According to the 1900 United States Federal Census, Edna lived with her parents and siblings in Jackson County, Vernon Township, Crothersville, Indiana on 19 June 1900. Her parents were George W. and Serilda Applegate, married 10 years. George was born in April 1857 and was 43 years old. Serilda was born in July 1872 and was 27 years old. Serilda had 5 children, 4 of which were still alive.

Their children living with them were John W., born May 1891 (9 years old); Elsie M., born January 1893 (Age 7 years old); Edna M., born December 1894 (Age 5 years old); and George, born August 1899 (Age 9 months).

Serilda’s sister Cora B. White, born August 1880 (Age 19) was there at the time as well, which tells me that Serilda’s maiden name was White. All were born in Indiana. George was a Drayman who owned his house.

Marriage


The Indiana, Select Marriages Index, 1748-1993 shows Edna M. Applegate marrying Edward Beyl on 24 August 1911 in Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana. Edna was 20 years old and was born in 1891 in Crothersville, Indiana. Her parents are listed as George Applegate and White. Edward’s parents are listed as M. Kern and Jacob Beyl. The Indiana, Marriage Index, 1800-1941 shows Edward’s birth date as 15 February 1887 and his age as 24.

John and Edna had a baby girl on 3 January 1913, her name was Margaret L.  They had a second daughter on 17 February 1914, according to Bartholomew County, Indiana, Birth Records Index, 1882-1920. They named her Mildred Viola.  The following family portrait shows John and Edna with their two daughters.  This photo was provided to me by their great grand daughter.  It would’ve been taken around 1915 or 1916 based on the ages of the girls.

In 1915, Edna and Edward lived at 62b Wilson, Columbus, Indiana per U.S. City Directories, 1822-1995.

At the time of the 1920 Federal Census, Edna and John had moved to 848 Prospect Street, Center Township, Marion County, Indiana. John was 31 years old and worked as a Bakery Foreman. French was his native language. Edna was 25 years old. Their children were Margaret M., 6 years old; Mildred, 5 years old; and Charles, 3 years and 8 months old.

Mary Lou Beyl was born 24 March 1929, per the Indiana State Board of Health Certificate of Birth. She was born at Indiana Christian Hospital in Center Township, Marion County, Indianapolis, Indiana. At the time, the family lived at 1329 Southeast Ave.  John Edward Beyl was 43 years old working as a Foreman. His birthplace is listed as Columbus, Indiana. Edna was 33 years old working as a housewife. Her birthplace is listed as Crothersville, Indiana. They had 4 children at the time. Mary Lou was born at 7:33pm.

In 1930, John Edward, Edna, and their children Margaret, Mildred, Charles, and Mary Lou at 1329 East Street, Center Township, Marion County, Indiana. John was 43, Edna was 35, Margaret was 17, Mildred was 16, Charles was 13, and Mary Lou was 1 year old.

John was a Dispenser at a Bakery Company. Margaret was a Saleslady at a Dry Goods Retail Store.

In 1931, Edward and Edna lived at 329 S. Baet Street, Indianapolis, Indiana, according to the U.S. City Directories, 1822-1995. Edward was a Warehouseman at the time.

At the time of the 1940 Federal Census, John and Edna lived at 1020 S. New Jersey Street, Center Township, Marion County, Indiana with their children Charles, Mary Lou, and Frederick. John Edward was 53 years old, Edna was 45, Charles was 23, Mary Lou was 11, and Frederick was 5 years old. John Edward was a Laborer in the Flood Prevention Industry. He made $453. Charles made $200 at school at NYA.

Death


Edna passed away on 8 March 1949. She had been battling breast cancer for a year, her death was caused by pleural effusion which onset 2 months before she passed. No autopsy was performed. She had been at Indianapolis General Hospital for the last 6 weeks of her life.

She was listed as a housewife living at 1020 S. New Jersey Street, Indianapolis. She was born 16 December 1894 to George W. Applegate and Serilda White. She was married to Edward Beyl who served as the informant on her Death Certificate.

Edna Mae was buried at Garland Brook Cemetery in Lot Number 519, Section Number 15 on 11 March 1949. The Lot Interment Order lists her death on 8 March 1949. She was 53 years old. She rests next to her husband, John Edward Beyl. Find A Grave lists her birthdate as December 1894.  I have submitted updates to Edna’s memorial on Find A Grave.

I was able to find an Obituary for Edna.  It reports that she had been ill for 3 months prior to her passing.  She was born in Crothersville but had lived in Indianapolis for 31 years.  She was survived by her husband, Edward Beyl; three daughters, Margaret Collins, Mildred Buchanan, and Mary Lou Lee; two sons, Charles and Eugene Beyl; a sister, Elsie Tudor; two brothers, John and George Applegate, and 11 grandchildren.

This is all of the information that I’ve found for Edna Mae Applegate thus far.  This information opens up a whole new direct ancestor line for me to look into.  I’m anxious to start exploring where the Applegate Family came from and see how far back I can trace on this line.
